BREAKING: The Northmart store in Iqaluit is on fire. As of 7 am this morning crews were still working to put the fire out.
Hassan Kassar is the assistant store manager. He says "We got a call at 2 am that there was a fire in the store and we came down and there was a big fire... unfortunately we are going to be closed today, obviously with the situation we are in until we are able to get into the building and assess what the situation is."
The fire has forced the evacuation of the nearby elders homes... which are located just behind the store.
Koonoo Muckpahloo is one of the elders who had to leave her house. She says in INuktitut "We are walking around in the night time, when we tell young people not stay out late, here we are walking door to door, and we can see the smoke. And all of us are wide awake now,"

The fire at the Northmart is just one of several reported fires last night and early this morning... all in the same area. They include another building fire and multiple vehicle fires.
Flames and black smoke are now visible from the fire at the Northmart store in Iqaluit. The store is one of the two main grocery stores in Iqaluit.
